Speaker Profile:

XIAO Lixian, was born in 1977. Her previous degrees include BA in Indonesian Language, GDUFS (1996.9 - 2001.7), and MA in Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Science, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia (2002.10 - 2004.10). She taught Indonesian language in GDUFS since 2001 and continued her teaching career from October 2004 to December 2014. From January 2014 to August 2017, she worked at the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Denpasar (Bali), where she was in charge of cultural, educational, and press affairs. She returned to GDUFS in September 2017 and served as Director of Department of Indonesian Language since then. Currently, Ms. XIAO taught a series of core courses and has been a member of the corpus linguistics research team. She participated in the writing of Indonesian Social Culture and Investment Environment and Report on Socio-Economic Development of Indonesia (2018): Trends and Challenges.

Lecture Outline:

Since 2013, the number of Chinese tourists to Bali, Indonesia has soared from over 500 thousand in 2014 to more than 1.3 million in 2017. China has become the largest tourist source of Indonesia. Bali, where locals believe in Balinese Hinduism, attracts tourists from all over the world with its unique culture. However, tourists know little about the Chinese elements included in its culture. The present lecture mainly introduces the Chinese elements in Balinese culture, supplemented by the introduction of the unique culture of Bali to help listeners know more about Bali.
